I have a Ford 4500 backhoe (1973 I think) and the bushing that goes a round the rod that extends out of the break housing wore out and started leaking. We got a new one from The Newholland Dealer but cannot get it to fit in. Does anyone have any tips on doing this. It's so close to fitting that it must be the right one, but we just can't get it to fit. Thanks

Scott, I'm not sure I understand what you have (I don't have a backhoe), but one trick of last resort that's worked for me to put a bushing in that's too tight is to put the bushing in dry ice for a little while. Getting it good and cold sometimes shrinks it just enough. ....

Yes, you probably have the correct brake rod boot, there is one part # for almost all Fords with manual wet brakes. It is a semi-press fit into the planetary housing. I have a wrist pin out of my JD 730D (another story) on my workbench at the dealership I use as a driver. The rod fits through the hollow center of the wristpin, and the flange on the boot fits up against the end of the pin. Find something similar and just seat the boot in with a hammer. Be careful to fit the boot properly around the brake rod, don't get any crap stuck between the rod & boot. Good Luck, RickB. ....
